1. Decide Where the Blind Will Fit
Will the blind sit inside the window recess or cover it from outside? Will it attach to the ceiling or wall? Making that decision after measuring can leave you with figures that do not describe the planned installation.
Open the window as you normally would. Check the handle’s turning space, any inward-opening sash and any projecting sill. Allow room for the blind when raised as well as lowered. Brackets fitting into a space does not necessarily mean the window will open comfortably.
2. Distinguish Overall Width from Fabric Width
The mechanism and brackets take up space, so overall product width may differ from fabric width. Do not assume the difference is the same for every model. If the order page only says ‘width’, ask whether it means fabric width, cassette width or the total width including fittings.
For example, if the area to cover is 120 cm wide, simply selecting ‘120 cm width’ is not enough information. First establish which two points that option measures on the finished blind. Here, 120 cm is an illustrative figure explaining why definitions matter, not a recommended order size.
3. Record the Window Measurements
Use a tape measure that does not stretch. For a recess fitting, record widths at the top, middle and bottom and heights at several points. This helps reveal uneven or narrowing areas. Use the product’s fitting and measuring guide to determine which measurements belong on the order.
For an outside-recess fitting, mark the start and end points of the area you want covered. Note the available space if there is a side wall, cupboard or another blind. Instead of automatically adding the same allowance to every window, consider the fabric coverage and the space needed by the mechanism together.
4. Clarify Where the Drop Measurement Starts
Measuring only the glass height does not describe a ceiling-mounted blind. Check where the drop starts in the selected system’s instructions, and state your desired bottom edge separately. Show any table or worktop in front of the window in the photo.
Always include units in your notes. Writing ‘width 120 cm, drop 180 cm’ rather than ‘120 × 180’ helps prevent reversed figures and unit confusion. If the order field requires another unit, check the conversion separately.
5. Check Your Order Against One Measurement Sheet
Complete the following fields separately for each window. Do not order for two similar-looking windows using just one measurement.
Ask the support team: ‘Which two points define the order width for this model, and which measurement should I enter based on my photo?’ Compare the answer with your selections on the order page before payment.
- Window name: left living-room window, kitchen or study.
- Fitting position: wall, ceiling or window recess.
- Raw measurements and units; a photo showing the measured points.
- Definition of order width and selected model.
- Bottom edge, handle and other obstructions.
- Control-side selection, if applicable, and access space.
How Many Centimetres Should You Add to a Zebra Blind Measurement?
There is no single allowance for every system. Fitting method, mechanism and the area to cover determine it. Do not add an allowance a second time if the seller’s measuring instructions already account for it.
Can You Use the Measurements of an Old Blind?
First determine whether the old measurement describes the fabric or the whole product. If the new mechanism differs, do not assume the same figure provides the same coverage.
Should You Choose a Model Before Measuring?
You can measure the window as preparation. Confirm the final order dimensions once the model and fitting system have been selected.
